National Bicycle Greenway Day

By virtue of the authority the National Bicycle Greenway has vested in me as Bike Mayor of the City of Oakland, I do hereby issue this proclamation honoring
NATIONAL BICYCLE GREENWAY DAY
May 16, 2010
WHEREAS, the bicycle was the first personal transportation vehicle and a century ago was an important part of American culture; and
WHEREAS, in 1884 Thomas Stevens rode a HiWheel bicycle from our city to Boston, making his the first successful bike ride across America; and
WHEREAS, the city of Oakland recognizes the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) mission to build our city into its network of bike friendly roads and bicycle pathways that will connect Boston with San Francisco/Oakland; and
WHEREAS, NBG Director, Martin Krieg who was born in Oakland, used its beautiful mountain roads to rebuild his body for his first bike ride across America, and the quiet of its neighborhoods to write the story about his recovery from head injury and the two bike rides across America that followed; and
WHEREAS, Oakland has over 90 miles of on street bike lanes, hosted the first US city sanctioned Car Free Day as well as the first big city Bike to Work day and is the proud home of the transit based Fruitvale Bike Station.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE BIKE MAYOR OF Oakland do hereby proclaim May 16, 2010
as "NATIONAL BICYCLE GREENWAY DAY" in Oakland , CA
